CNMHC News Alert, January 19, 2001

On January 30, there will be a joint hearing "to consider recommendations of the State's Little Hoover Commission in its recent report, Being There: Making a Commitment to Mental Health." The hearing is sponsored by the California Assembly Health Subcommittee on Mental Health (Chair, Assemblywoman Helen Thomson) and the California Senate Select Committee on Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health (Chair, Senator Wesley Chesbro). The hearing will be held from 1:30 pm - 7 pm at the Capitol in Sacramento. There will be invited panelists and public comment. Public comment is scheduled for 5 pm. (We do not know the room in which the hearing will take place at this time.)

It is important for clients and advocates to be there. It is the first mental health related "event" of this legislative session. The mental health community, legislators, and public must see that we will be as potent a force in pursuit of positive voluntary community solutions as we are against the non-solutions of force and coercion. Us "being there" also makes it clear that we will remain vigilant about our rights.
